Since the establishment of Omilos Eksipiretiton, the Theatrical Group of Omilos selflessly gives theatrical performances for children at any kind of caring and hosting organizations for children (children’s hospitals, boarding schools, shelters, orphanages, sheltered housing for people with special needs, etc.)

The work of our Theatrical Group has now become well known in the field of special education and we receive many invitations from Heads and Teachers of special educational needs schools for us to visit their schools and perform to the students.

In this article we present to you the overall experience of our most recent theatrical performances in special needs schools.

Some people say, “Do not co-star with kids, they will steal the show!”. But this is exactly what we want to achieve with the Theatrical Group of Omilos… the children to become the protagonists! In each of our performances there is a dialogue between our group and the children. That’s just how the performance flows. It flows with imagination, cooperation and lots of joy!

are some of the teachers’ comments after our performances.

In each of our performances we had an average of 60 a 70 children attending, along with their teachers. In the beginning, some teachers wanted to inform us that «you know…the children have difficulties,and they may not be able to stay concentrated for the entire performance», but we always say to the teachers that there has never, ever been any difficulty with our performance and the children. On the contrary, all children always watch the play, they participate and enjoy it.

A teacher told us at the end of the play “children have never kept so quiet! even a student who has never stay seated for an entire performance, today, for the first time,he stayed focused until the very end!”. Além disso, the huge smiles of the children, their touch on our hands, as well as their warm voice and their applause was the biggest confirmation that the message of the play passed to them: Every child is a miracle!”

The children were watching the performance with a great pleasure. And something more… they were concentrated and actively participating in it, they were applauding and showing us – even when they couldn’t say it with words – how much they enjoyed it, each in their own unique way. They did come on stage with us and help us to change the backdrops, they danced and sang with us, they made comments and were teasing us, as well as they gave us fantastic ideas for future performances!

Even those children who were the most hesitant, came and sat in the front seats slowly-slowly. Even those who could only express themselves with sweet sounds and not words, they applauded and participated in their own unique way.

Children with wheelchairs or not enjoyed dancing together with their teachers and members of our theatrical group.

“Thank you very much for coming”, another teacher said on behalf of a young student whom he brought to us as she wanted to offer us a big smile. Some children wanted to offer us their lunchboxes and share it. Joy was everywhere.

The Little Miracle of the fairytale was alive inside every child… The great Miracle was happening right in front of our eyes. The children stayed calm and concentrated for over an hour in the room, all together as one group. For their teachers this it was unexpected, as they already had told us. They didn’t expect it… but we knew…

Before we leave, we donated our fairytale book «A Line and a Dot and a Miracle on the Spot!» to all schools, so that teachers and children can read the book together and relive the search of the Miracle.

By contacting the teachers in the following days after the play, we learned that the children were particularly calm and happy for the rest of the day, even the next day of the performance.

Our theatrical group continues its activities… steadily and selflessly, just like all the work done by Omilos Eksipiretiton.

We were happy to receive today a thank you letter from the Head and the Teachers’ Association of the Special Vocational Gymnasium-Lyceum of Ilion, where our theatrical group performed the play “A LINE AND A DOT AND A MIRACLE ON THE SPOT”on April 19, 2024. Dear Ms. Evangelia Gkioni,

We would like to express our warmest thanks to yourself and the theatrical group of Omilos Eksipiretiton for the wonderful theatrical play “A LINE AND A DOT AND A MIRACLE ON THE SPOT” which took place in the amphitheatre of our School.

More than 40 estudantes, together with their teachers and the entire staff of the school attended the theatrical play. We all followed the hero, our Little Miracle, in the exploration of «…I want to become…» through its adventures. Our students were very happy to watch the play, they were very concentrated and dedicated to the play, and mainly, they participated through the interactive activities offered by your theatrical group.

Students went up to the stage to dance, enjoy and participate in the play each one in their own unique way. Mais especificamente, a student of ours, at the point where the Little Miracle was asking the Baker «…I want to become…», took a loaf of bread and went around to the amphitheatre dancing, full of joy because he himself was participating in the theatrical play with your group. Some students went up to the stage during the play and danced to their own dancing capabilities; some danced from their seats while some others participated in dancing with their wheelchairs.A student went on his own to greet all the members of the theatrical group, one by one, in order to show them his gratefulness and gladness.

Thank you very much for coming and selflessly giving smiles to all of us. Thank you for the message you passed that we do not need to be looking for the miracle as «EVERY CHILD IS A MIRACLE ON ITS OWN».

In the end, you donated to us your wonderful fairytale book with a written dedication for the library of our School. We believe that in our times, these actions of love and joy should be highlighted so that all can know who are those who actually support our children through their actions.

On Friday 19th of April, Omilos’ theatrical group performed for the students of the Special Needs Vocational Secondary & High School of Ilion, the theatrical play “A line and a dot and a miracle on the spot!"

We were happy to receive the following letter from Mrs N.K., special education teacher of the specific school, who we wholeheartedly thank for sharing her thoughts with us!

«Dear Theatrical Group of Omilos Eksipiretiton,

With this letter I want to express my thoughts and feelings that you evoked through the images of joy that you gifted the students of our school. I am coming to thank you from the depths of my heart for your tangible support. From the first week that I made the request for you to come to our school, you called me and discussed for a possible date to arrange the play. From my part I was explaining to you the possible difficulties that may occur with our students but you reassured me by telling me “Don’t worry, the children will watch and participate throughout the play”.

We thank each member of the theatrical group separately; you are also a MIRACLE, individually each one of you. Through the selfless offer of your play, you brought joy to our students lavishly. Or students really enjoyed it, danced with the Wiseman, the Miracle, the Baker, and the whole town of the Wows.

The roles of the Wiseman, the Godmother, the Miracle, the Baker, the Teacher, the Pupils and the whole Town of the Wows was as if your group had studied as actors, and they interacted with our students so nicely. I thank my colleague and member of your group, Valia who, when I learned about your play, was willing to explain to me each role of the story and how all this started as an idea to build a wonderful theatrical performance from a book by Omilos Eksipiretiton.

I thank each and every one separately: Tasos, Persa, Kostas, Ioulia and Vasiliki through the fantastic roles they performed. Warm thanks for the donation of your book -with a dedication- for the library of our school, so that all the teachers and students can read and search for the little Miracle that is hidden inside us.

The Headmaster, the teaching staff of the school as well as the parents would like to thank “The Servers’ Sociedade ” and especially its Theatrical Group, who visited our school on 26/3/2024 and presented the performance “A Line and a Dot and a Miracle on the Spot”. The students of our school watched the play with great enthusiasm, and they participated with smiles and applause throughout the performance, without getting bored for a minute.

We were fascinated by your colourful and cheerful set, the fancy costumes of the actors, as well as the passion and joy for creation of your actors and all the cast, who did not seem to be amateurs at all, on the contrary.

Discussing with Evangelia Gioni

Who is your favorite author?

Of course, I can’t “pick” a favorite tragic poet, but of the works of the three great tragedians, I particularly love Aeschylus’ Oresteia trilogy and Sophocles’ Oedipus Tyrannus.

What is the first book you read?

I will tell you the first book I picked myself. It was “A different Journey” by Katerina Scaliora. I still remember that visit to the neighborhood bookstore. I must have been 7 or 8 years old. I read a lot as a child with favorite authors being Zorz Sari and Alkie Zei.

What prompted you to start writing?

Through the activities of the theatrical group of The Servers’ Sociedade, which I am in charge of, we have visited over the years many, many places of care and hospitality for children and people with special skills in general to perform our plays, always free of any charge of course. There I saw the great need people have to believe in the potential of every human being to overcome difficulties and be well, something our group believes in and serves. E então, of course, that every child can have a book in their hands that deals with the theme of acceptance and self-love. This was the driving force that made me want to write and even start with this particular book. It is not a children’s book by accident and certainly not a “fairy tale” at all.

How would you describe your book “A line and a dot and a miracle on the spot”?

It is a story of seek and revelation. It is the quest of every human being until it is revealed to them that each and every person and life itself is a miracle. But beyond that, and I say this in every chance I get, this book for me clearly illustrates the magic that the group function creates. It is the result of pure teamwork, because a text alone is not enough for a children’s book. Without the illustrations by Valia Skalomenou and the aesthetics of Marianna Smyrniotou, who edited the whole set-up, it could not have been done. Nor, of course, without the encouragement and especially the trust of the Heads of Megas Seirios Publications. Not to mention many more who contributed in their own way. Assim, if I put it all together it is “the magical story of the quest and revelation of the miracle through the group”

How did you come up with the idea of writing this particular book?

As I said before, through the work of The Servers’ Society theatrical group we have gained a huge amount of contact and experience from very sensitive places and people. Magical things happen in the places we visit, children closed in themselves, who don’t talk to anyone, come on stage and play with us, embrace us and don’t want us to leave. Regardless of the difficulties they face, they express themselves when we are there and for days after the performance, in ways that leave their caregivers speechless. And all for a very simple reason. Because we don’t see in them the problem but the miracle. I have many, many similar experiences in my profession as a psychotherapist in drug addiction rehabilitation. This is what we wanted to capture on paper. There is a huge need for children and adults to love themselves and believe in their own potential.

Our little hero is looking for something after having a dream. Is it easy or difficult to find the answers we are looking for?

Easy, I think, as long as we want to. The issue for me is not the difficulties, because difficulties are a given. The issue is whether we want to search and work with ourselves to find what we are looking for and thus overcome the difficulties. The little Miracle of our story wanted to find the answer and he found it. He did not give up despite the difficulties; he did not give up. And finally, if you observe it, you will see that from within him came the answer, from within himself emerged what he was looking for.

Our little hero “wants to be” but no one can understand him. What do you think is the reason for this?

People get lost in the rhythms and difficulties of everyday life, in their ego and their individuality. In our fairy tale, everyone tries to understand the Little Miracle but they cannot get to the essence of what he is looking for, because everyone sees it from a more limited perspective. It makes sense, of course, but thof courseactly why there is a Wise Man who sees things in a broader and more global way, which is why he can truly understand our hero and show him how to find the answers he is looking for. It is very interesting that in our performances, all the children watch with great interest and actively participate in the play and the final revelation. All the impressions we have received from parents, from the children themselves and from book readings organized by educators and psychologists in child care institutions to which Megas Seirios Publications donated the book, are vivid and full of enthusiasm. I remember that the children at the House of the Smile of the Child in Kavala said to their educator, when she finished reading, ‘We are already miracles with a big smile, you know!’ This is the most important thing for me!

What would you like to say to your readers?

I will borrow a quatrain by the poet and philosopher Dimitris Kakalidis: “When planets to your courtyard come asking of suns the source, tell them it is your very soul, soul of infinite souls, of fires a source”. This is every human being. So let us see the essence of each one, the essence in us and around us beyond appearances, forms and separateness. This gives us great strength and we need it especially in the difficult times we live in.

Would you like to tell us a few words about your next writing project?

Opportunity to confess that it is…unknown yet! I have a lot of ideas, but I’m also on a quest like the hero of the book. I’m thinking about something for my next children’s book, but maybe I will try a synthesis of essay and experiential writing through my experience in psychotherapy in rehab.

A psychologist by profession, with great clinical experience in the field of psychotherapy, and by nature an admirer of the synthetic art of theatre through her amateur journeys in it, Evangelia Gkioni makes her debut as a writer with the children’s story “A Line and a Dot and a Miracle on the Spot!”.

Of course, the book was preceded by Of courserical adaptation and the performing of the respective play by the theatrical group that she organises, coordinates and directs (and also plays in it from time to time, depending on the needs). A theatrical group of twenty people, with a long history in the field of children’s theatre, which performs exclusively selflessly in all kinds of facilities where they take in and take care of children. The position of the writer and of the group is the certainty that impasses do not exist and that every problem can be overcome. Why? Very simply, because inside us exists the miracle!

As this note requests in itself to be laconic, we will not, for the time being, cite her talks and presentations at academic, scientific and literary conferences, seminars, cultural and other events in Greece and abroad.

A story that is true beyond belief is the first children’s story of our Publications “MEGAS SEIRIOS.”

The tale is told through the eyes of a young child on a wondrous adventurous quest.  But never did our hero imagine that… inside him was already what he longed for.

Our theatrical group unceasingly carries on presenting its performances in hospitals, shelters and institutions for children, a work which has been carried out since 1980.

We prepare all costumes, scenery, música, we rehearse each play with the aim to visit children who do not have many opportunities to go to the theater, and present to them a complete theatrical performance always of course selflessly.

We enter with them the world of fairytales, we play with them, we have fun always with the inner stance that there are no dead ends and that the constant miracle of life is there for us to discover!

Our new play is exactly about that: the miracle of everyday life from the everyday things that might seem minor to the universe itself. But especially the miracle that lies within every child, every person and that its up to us to acknowledge and express it!

We have already done our premier in Omilos, and we have played in:

• the Children’s Hospital of Athens
• the Smile of the Child (House of Melissa)
• the municipality of Athens

It was a chilly Saturday evening in December. Our theatrical group was to take part at the festive events organised by the Municipality of Galatsi for children of sensitive social groups.

The story of the greedy king and “mad” quiltmaker was about to unfold before the eyes of all the children and grownups present. Like many of the shows we had put on for little children in the past seven months, this was going to be another exciting day for everyone.

The cast and creative team get to work behind the scene preparing the costumes, props and stage.

Peeking through the curtains, you could hear the chatter, as people young and old, take their seats waiting to experience the theatrical adventure about to take place.

“Is everyone ready?” The director asks. Yes!, the cast responded excitedly. Great, she says pulling the curtains open as the clock strikes six.

The audience become silent as the music starts playing in the background. The room is completely full with people including the administrative heads of the municipality.

The Quiltmaker appears on stage to the crowds applauds; followed by the narrators, the rich ladies and the homeless. Then the sounds of trumpets are heard announcing the appearance of the grumpy King who says repeatedly, “I want, I want, I want”.

The kids roll in their seats with laughter, as the clumsy guards show up, followed by the bear and the sparrow. The game with the children begins and they respond. And right at the end the whole group sings “And I love you all” embracing everyone with open arms.

The audience stand one after the other, clapping their hands in appreciation and the little children too. The cast and creative team in return applaud the people for being a wonderful audience.

The standing ovation was followed by a thank you speech by the Mayor and his Deputy for our participation at the event and the work and selfless offering of Omilos.

But for the event that followed ours, our stay would have be longer.

We heartily thank you all for a wonderful journey so far.

They laugh, they clap their hands and they yell, “yes, yes, give them all”, they dance and they sing.

Their eyes are wide open and some children “shush!” those who can’t keep quiet and…

“Is it over?!”, one of our little friends asks anxiously at the end.

“I liked the theatlical play vely vely much but it was the quiltmaker that I liked the most” another asked.

On Saturday 13th of December 2014, we visited the Boarding School “Agios Nikolaos” in Paiania and on Sunday 14 Dezembro 2014, we visited the community home of “The Smile of the Child” in Marousi, where we shared with the children two days of brimming joy.
