The refereed work on the Kakalidis Method done by Mr. Lazaros Koumentakis, director of the Ano Liosia Special Gymnasium – High School and Kostas Skalomemos, Assistant Professor in Birmingham University, was first announced with great success at the first international conference of the European Society for Research on the Education of Adults, an academic body that promotes and disseminates theoretical and practical research on adult education in Europe, held at the Open University in Patras 5-7 July 2023, titled “Reimagining transformative and emancipatory adult education for a world to come”.

The proceedings of the conference have recently been published, including the article “The Kakalidis Method of Analysis as a Transformative Practice in a Group of Adult Students: presentation of an Experiential Workshop”.

This is a presentation of the practical implementation of the Kakalidis Method in the context of adult education and specifically in a project that took place in a Second Chance School in Athens. Already with the announcement of the topic, the students had shown great interest and the participation exceeded all expectations!

So was all the work that took place, as the group worked with the Kakalidis method to approach three works of art – a poem, a film and a song – to delve into them, discovering their essence and finally to compose two literary texts based on their experience.

The methodology, the practical application and especially the results of the immersion with the Kakalidis Method as a personal experience and learning of the participating adult students were presented at the conference and described in the article!

Following the successful presentation of the “Kakalidis Method” at the 7th International Literature Conference of the international academic association ATINER in June 2014 and its warm reception from university professors and academics from all over the world, our paper on the Kakalidis Method was selected for publication to yet another scientific magazine.

As mentioned both in the magazine’s and in ATINER’s website, the criteria for the article selections are strict and must fulfill all the academic scientific norm standards, designated by internationally recognized academics, who also make the final choice.

Consequently, very few from the papers presented or submitted are eventually published!

“The Kakalidis Method for Literature Analysis”, created by the founder of Omilos Eksipiretiton, philosopher and poet, Dimitris Kakalidis, was presented for the first time at the 7th International Literature Conference, organized by the international academic association “Athens Institute for Research and Education” (ATINER), on 9-12 June 2014.

The paper titled “The Kakalidis Method for Literature Analysis: A Synthesis Approach”, was presented by Dr Fevronia Christodoulidi, member of Omilos, Professor at the University of East London and Mrs Paraskevi Kostopetrou, Head of Megas Seirios Publications.

The “Kakalidis method” was warmly received, in both its content and methodology, by the participants – academics and university professors from all over the world. Various professors also expressed their great interest for this pioneering, as they said, way of analysis and expressed their wish to be able to teach it to their students. Furthermore, as we highlighted during the conference, the ‘Kakalidis Method’ is an approach to analysis that can be applied in various fields, such as poetry, literature, every form of art and one’s life perspective as a whole.

The Kakalidis Method for Literature Analysis: A Synthesis Approach

This paper aims at presenting the work of philosopher and poet Dimitris Kakalidis (1943-1995), emphasising the method he developed for the analysis of short stories and poetry, termed as the ‘Kakalidis Method’. In his works, the two volumes on ‘The Wisdom of Poetry’ and ‘The Wisdom of the Short Story’, he presents an innovative method of analysing 100 poems and 36 stories by Greek authors; this, acquires a perspective that pervades and reveals the inner spiritual resources of each work, demonstrating universal messages. Each literary piece takes dimensions beyond the visible contours, revealing the infinite within the limited, bringing the unconscious into consciousness. His starting point for each analysis is ‘Man-Humanity-Entity’ in their everlasting, intertwined relationship, based on the belief that each individual is an enlightened being in their core, going through life’s path only for this to be expressed in action.

‘Kakalidis Method’ draws from ancient Greek schools of thought, i.e Pythagoras’ numerology, Aristotle’s assurance for matter-spirit co-existence, Heraclitus’s command about the endless flow, Plato’s argument that concepts are fundamentally numbers and Socrates’ maieutics that elicit the transcendent level of ideas lurking in the plot of each play. Hence, this method transcends the meaning of each word into a deeper spiritual journey of every aspect of human experience. Kakalidis ‘plays’ with symbols and numbers, invents new terms where the hidden message of the Word is deciphered, thus transforming every literary image into an Odyssey of the experience of the whole human race since the beginning of time. His method is acknowledged as an approach of spiritual revelation, bringing the synthesis of profound meanings and leading the reader to a state of uplifted awareness and spiritual expansion. In its innovative expression, his contribution is of worldwide legacy and this paper will demonstrate examples of such spiritual perspective.

The “Kakalidis Μethod for poetry and literature analysis”, was presented at the 7th International Conference on Literature organized by the international academic association “Athens Institute for Research and Education” (ATINER). “The Kakalidis method”, as it is officially called now, for analysing poems and short stories, created by the founder of Omilos Eksipiretiton, philosopher and poet, Dimitris Kakalidis, was presented for the first time in front of an academic audience. This consisted of professors in the fields of Literature, History and Culture from over 20 countries around the world.

In the first part of our presentation we focused on discussing the method’s basic principles followed by a brief analysis of a poem presented in the book “The Wisdom of the Poem”, by D. Kakalidis. Thus, the participants had the opportunity to see an example of the direct application of the method in a literature context as well as its potential to bring a sense of soulful uplifting to the reader.

Various other professors also expressed their great interest for this pioneering, as they said, way of analysis and expressed their wish to be able to teach it to their students.
